Matthies is nearly five. He lives in Holland. His mama is English, his papa is Dutch and Matthies actually seems to think he’s American.
He likes Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield and Tom and Jerry, chicken nuggets and plain white bread buns from the chi-chi baker in town. He also loves science, especially astronomy and anatomy. But he loves his mama a googleplex, so I guess I beat even gall bladders and exoplanets.
We’re still waiting for a place at a school where they can cope with Matthies’s intelligence and autistic quirkiness. Until he can go to a real school, he has to make do with Mama, the internet and lashings of Bill Nye.
Matthies mostly teaches himself about whatever he’s interested in.
But if he’s going to be happy at a real school, he’s going to have to get the hang of real school stuff, like using a pencil, staying on task and keeping his damn pants on. This blog is part of our homeschool scheme: a sweetener for doing all those sums, and putting the caps back on the markers, and a way to show Matthies that learning is fun even when he isn’t in the driving seat. Wish us luck.
